Southern Comfort

2001
90 minutes
English
Documentary
5 Stars

This slow, beautiful movie about real people in the real Deep South will bring both smiles and tears. The filmmakers let the people tell their stories, and their fears--very real concerns. Robert is a transgender female to male, who is dying of ovarian cancer because when he had the surgery, the doctors wouldn't give him a hysterectomy, and when he developed cancer, they wouldn't treat him as it "would embarrass their other patients." Adult male bovine excrement! However, with trans people in the news so much, I think this movie should be seen by everyone, especially those who dislike/fear trans. I think it will be a real eye-opener to many people. This movie is also an indictment to the medical profession of the Deep South. A poignant and ultimately uplifting film to be watched by all.

Vidal Sassoon: The Movie

2011

I remember when the Sassoon hair cuts were THE styles, but of course, not for me. I thought this might be an interesting documentary, and I found it fascinating. I knew nothing of Sassoon, other than I could never, ever, wear one of his styles. My hair is naturally wavy, and all the styles I've seen are for straight hair. Sigh. This documentary is about both the man, and the styles, and obviously the people who made it held him in high regard. I am amazed at what he did, and how he did it. But then, I used to put tape on my daughter's bangs to cut them and never could do a decent job. To me, Hair Styling is Magick at its best, and Sassoon was Chief Magician! A delight to watch.

Lost Nation: The Ioway

2007
57 minutes
English
Documentary
5 Stars

This thought provoking documentary is about the Ioway Indians. If you are interested in the history of our indigenous peoples, be sure to put this movie in your queue. It tells the story of how this great tribe gave away their heritage through trickery and chicanery of the Whites, what they lost, and what they have today. Well done and worth your time.

Sing Your Song

I grew up listening to Harry Belafonte. I loved his music then, and I love it now. I thought this would be a documentary about his music. It isn't. This is a documentary about the man, and his life. I had no idea he had spent so much time in Africa, that he placed his life in danger to help others, that he dedicated his life, early on, to helping others, to build better race relations. This documentary is better than many history books that talk about the same subject. It should be in every school in every history and social study class, and be viewed and discussed at least once a year. In the meantime, view it, and discuss it, with your kids.
