Southern Comfort

2001
90 minutes

This slow, beautiful movie about real people in the real Deep South will bring both smiles and tears. The filmmakers let the people tell their stories, and their fears--very real concerns. Robert is a transgender female to male, who is dying of ovarian cancer because when he had the surgery, the doctors wouldn't give him a hysterectomy, and when he developed cancer, they wouldn't treat him as it "would embarrass their other patients." Adult male bovine excrement! However, with trans people in the news so much, I think this movie should be seen by everyone, especially those who dislike/fear trans. I think it will be a real eye-opener to many people. This movie is also an indictment to the medical profession of the Deep South. A poignant and ultimately uplifting film to be watched by all.
