Himalaya

French/Nepal, excellent subtitles, Netflix
109 minutes, 1999
5 stars, 2000 Academy Award nominee, Best Foreign Language Film

If the culture and music of Nepal have ever piqued your interest, this is the film for you. It tells the story of the annual caravan from a remote village to trade their salt for grain. The story revolves around Tinle, the elderly chief, who loses his son on a caravan, and tries to maintain his leadership against the younger Karma, his son's best friend. Karma challenges the old man's leadership, as well as the traditions of their people, the Dolpo-pa. This movie was made without actors, using the villagers. It is poignant, heartfelt, and true. The DVD also has a section on Making of the Movie. It runs about 20-30 minutes, and is as fascinating as the movie. Absolutely stunning photography, scenery, and music. A movie to watch more than once.

  1. An enjoyable movie! I thought many of the villagers did a better job acting than some of their over-paid Hollywood counterparts! The scenery was beautiful. Definitely a movie worth watching. If you watch it, do yourself a favour and watch the 'Making of' piece afterwards.
